Jupiter
Jupiter is the largest of the planets. In Greco-Roman mythology Jupiter (or Zeus) was the king of the gods. The astrological archetype of Jupiter is associated with expansion, uplift, abundance, growth, success and buoyant optimism.
As such Jupiter has added associations with travel, which broadens our horizons, and learning, which expands our minds. These characteristics of Jupiter reflect how Jupiter takes sundry external phenomenon and incorporates them into the larger whole.
Because of Jupiter’s association with success, Jupiter is also associated with celebration.
The planets that are aligned in tension with Jupiter in our birth charts tend to be crowned royalty, just as Jupiter was crowned king of the gods. This means they are uplifted, celebrated, and recognized as high and esteemed. They tend to reflect where we are positive, and where we tend to expand.
Because of Jupiter’s association with success and royalty, Jupiter can manifest as pageantry and the exalted trappings of ceremony.
The challenging end of the spectrum of Jupiter’s archetype shows where being overly optimistic can be a fault, and too much expansion can lead to surfeit, bloating, and corpulence, whether physically or metaphorically.
