Jupiter-Pluto

Jupiter-Pluto brings together the high ideals of Jupiter, and the bountiful success associated with the Jupiter archetype, with the dramatic depth of Pluto, in which power and transformation reside.

One way this combination can show up includes encounters in life with “big fish,” whose wealth and power is notable, or becoming a “big fish” oneself. Digging deep (Pluto) for riches (Jupiter) is another reflection of this archetypal tension. This combination can show up as high society (Jupiter) power plays (Pluto), though equally it can also express as the successful and celebrated (Jupiter) achievement of deep transformation (Pluto). Because of Pluto’s association with transformation, and Jupiter’s association with the exalted trappings of pomp and ceremony, one may feel a deep magnetism (Pluto) toward orchestrating elevated ceremonies (Jupiter) in honor of the mysteries of transformation (Pluto).

Below are examples of famous people born with this combination in their natal charts (natal chart is another word for astrological birth chart, or pictographic representation of the sky when they were born). When we witness how this combination shows up in the lives of others, we can become more self-aware of how this combination shows up in our own lives. The more we are conscious of the ways astrological alignments (otherwise known as “aspects”) show up in our lives, the more the archetypal tensions involved can become integrated in our lives, thus revealing their inherent strengths to us.

Please note that the tension of this archetypal combination, as illustrated in the lives and creations of the famous people in the examples below, may be demonstrated in ways that are more integrated or less integrated.

  • The Jupiter-Pluto combination joins together the heights of Jupiter with the depths and power of Pluto. Upper class wealth (Jupiter) mixed with Plutonic power is one way in which this combination can manifest. The life of Bill Gates, who was born with this combination in his natal chart, reflects this. Warren Buffet, also born with this combination in his natal chart, is another good examples of this dynamic.

  • Pluto’s power brought up to the grand and exalted heights of Jupiter is a potential manifestation of this combination. Actress Cate Blanchett, who was born with this combination in her natal chart, demonstrates this potential in her role as Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings in the following scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spHEw2n9LwE. In the film Ragnorak, Cate Blanchett played the role of Hela, an exalted (Jupiter) goddess who has too much (Jupiter) power (Pluto) and ends up causing Asgard, a place that represents the high (Jupiter) gods and goddesses, to burn and be destroyed (Pluto).

  • One potential of the Jupiter-Pluto combination involves joining the Plutonic power of the masses with the high ideals of Jupiter. The life and work of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born with the Jupiter-Pluto combination in his birth chart, demonstrates this in his ability to stimulate the power of the masses (Pluto) in India with the high ideals (Jupiter) of Indian independence and statehood.

  • This combination in the birth chart of author Leigh Bardugo can be seen reflected in her novel Ninth House, in which the high societies (Jupiter) associated with Yale university are connected with the dark and arcane powers (Pluto) of ritual magic.

  • The Jupiter-Pluto combination in the natal chart of author J.R.R. Tolkien can be seen in a fantastically vivid light in his description of the mines of Moria in his The Lord of the Rings. The Dwarves of Moria dug too deeply (Pluto) in these mines for riches (Jupiter) and released a demon (Pluto) of the ancient world known as a “Balrog.” While traveling through the mines of Moria the wizard Gandalf then fought with this demon and in the process went through a death/rebirth experience. In this example we see the Jupiter-Pluto combination showing up in various ways, including a compulsion (Pluto) for riches (Jupiter) resulting in a deep dig that releases a demon (Pluto) whose clash with Gandalf represents the successful (Jupiter) transformation (Pluto) in which the wizard overcomes a demon of the deep and is successfully (Jupiter) reborn in a more powerful (Pluto) form.
