If you’ve ever heard a lecture on meditation you may have heard the dark side of the mind brought up. This is the storage vault of your doubts and fears.

In meditation we’re meant to just observe them and not really play in to them.

Yet, why when doubts come up, do we never ever just observe them?

Why don’t we remember that lecture on meditation that forewarned us and prepared us for this very moment?

The reason is because when the dark side of the mind comes up it doesn’t come up just inside the brain. It’s not a mood. The whole world turns dark. The darkness appears outside of us, and is closing in.

We don’t remember any advice that life might have given us in the form of a meditation lecture. Because on the dark side of the mind life itself is hostile to us. It would never have done us the favor of forewarning us about this experience. And if it had forewarned us, how can we trust that forewarning?

How can the dark side of the mind generalize itself to all life and all reality?

Because the mind is our reality. The world you see when you look out through your eyes is not the consensus world, but rather the inside of your own mind turned inside out.

No wonder we can’t all agree on things! We’re all experiencing a different world.

Yet, there is hope.

When you experience the dark side of the mind (or the light side, for that matter) it is a passing phenomenon. Yet, underneath it is always one constant: the present moment.

Your mind changes.

“The World” changes.

But we never ever leave this very moment…the moment you are reading THESE WORDS. This here present moment...

Hello.
